Wondering what to do on any day where the kids are stuck inside? Trying to build traditions and spend time with your kids? How about making homemade playdough? It is easy and you probably have all of the the ingredients in your pantry.
- 1 cups flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar (baking or spice aisle)
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1/4 cup salt
- food coloring
- essential oils (optional)
Mix all of the ingredients in a saucepan, adding the food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until smooth. The mixture will start to gum or ball up as it cooks. If there is a lot of humidity in the air, you can add some extra flour as needed. Once it starts to look like playdough, take off heat, let cool and then knead until smooth. At this point, you can add just a few drops of an essential oil for scent if you desire (such as lemon for yellow).
If you want to make one batch and then make it different colors, do not add food coloring until you are kneading. Store in air tight container and it will keep. A hint – let it cool and dry out a little before sealing on the container.
Today we made orange playdough for October, and added some cinnamon leaf essential oil. The picture up top is what it looks like after kneading. We used orange specialty food coloring since I had some left over, but I like to use natural food coloring when possible – tumeric for yellow, beet juice for pink, etc. The picture in the container is a triple batch of the above recipe for my son’s school.
