New University Study Discovers That Bleach
is Ineffective In Killing Mold on Wood
"While bleach is often recommended for remediation of surface mold on wood, our [university research study] results illustrate that the treatment does not eliminate the surface microflora," is the conclusion of the Oregon State University study of the effects of chlorine bleach on mold growth on Douglas fir wood [an important timber crop in the state of Oregon]. The research study was conducted by Professor Jeffrey Morrell, Dept. of Wood Science, Oregon State University, as assisted by Adam Taylor [graduate research assistant] and Camille Freitag [Senior Research Associate], as published in Forest Products Journal, 54:4, 2004.

I know there are many "opinions' on mold issues - some mightily influenced by the insurance industry - but the Government sites are now warning about mold - the EPA says DO NOT use bleach when cleaning , etc. The CDC calls C. gattii an Emerging Infectious Disease with a proven 25% mortality rate and which attacks HEALTHY and immuno compromised people AND also attacks animals - like our family pets, dolphins, horses among others.

Opinions mean very little to me - I have watched too many of my loved ones pass away from a toxic building and my husband and I are both deathly ill with the side effects of living in a house with hidden mold. Our experiences do not come from books but from real life and we learned the important things to test for in our blood and whether there is a REAL way that works to recover even when you get as sick as I was. Two years ago I could not leave my house except in a Hazmat suit, gloves, goggles and respirator. I may always remain Multiply Chemically Sensitive. My cancer has returned.

Read the SCIENCE - not some news article or someone who is funded by pharma or insurance companies. If you see an article that tries to tell you mold is not a problem LOOK up where their funding comes from and take the time to deal with any mold issues in your own home appropriately and get over thinking your emotional state means anything to the mycotoxins that can destroy your health and cost you your home and possessions.

You can find some more info on my work site - we just started a nonprofit that is going to help people who (like us) who have lost everything to a toxic house and then nearly died because we were too ignorant to take heed when we were warned about Cross Contamination. That new site should be up this week and we are going to accept donations for those who lose everything to provide whatever we can to help them.

We try to just educate most of the time but we have also will do some inspections - only because we Know from experience most "trained and certified" mold inspectors still really do not understand what they are doing and how life saving and important a proper test can be. m(Yes we are certified too) and did you people know that there IS an EPA test for mold - "ERMI" that is helpful in determining the safety of the place you live or work in?

However, the articles are right - NEVER just rely on one test or on one instance - and LEARN how to detox properly and find physicians who know how to treat this stuff. Look for the VCS test by Dr Shoemaker for an inexpensive way to determine if you have been poisoned.

Okay, this is a hugely long post, and you can find more info on my site.

Thanks,
Deborah Kalita

Mold Remediation is a massive pain in the posterior because even the supposedly licensed ones are out to get your money. I got estimates from 4 different remediators (2 of them IICRC certified), but am yet to find a consensus in pricing and/or remediation procedure. Yes, they all draw up numbers for containment, HEPA air cleaning blah-blah, but then they try to take you for a ride when it comes to replacing drywall or cabinets (in my case).

But one thing's for sure....make sure you get a licensed company to do your mold inspection. Make sure the inspection report is very detailed, including specifics of mold infested areas in your house (not just say family room, but say, 3x3 feet under north window in family room). And most importantly, DO NOT have the inspection company also do the remediation or even suggest a remediation company for you. Get estimates from atleast 4-5 remediation companies. Do not let them talk you into replacing everything. Be firm about what you want. If they offer to replace drywall/cabinets or "sugggest" contractors for you, be wary. Get an estimate mainly for the remediation, and try to get someone else to replace the drywall and/or cabinets.

A note for house-hunters looking at buying foreclosed property. Do not let the home inspector also do the mold inspection. Yes, you HAVE to do a mold inspection for a foreclosed home. And get a certfiied MOLD inspector for the job.

I found out about you because of Chris Harrington's tweet about his wife being a fan of your book.

Unfortunately, I've had over exposure to mold and developed an allergy.

I will definitely be using this article as a resource to keep our home and family healthy.

I also look forward to checking out your book.

Thanks for sharing!
